The Tokyo Olympics – let the games begin!
In 1964, Tokyo became the first ever Asian city to host the Olympic Games and it was a triumph that propelled Japan into the modern era. Now, the city is ready to host the games once more this summer 2021, exactly one year after the Tokyo 2020 Olympics were originally due to begin. Despite being rescheduled for 2021, the event will retain the Tokyo 2020 name. Soon after, the summer Paralympics will begin on 24th August and run until 5th September.
The Tokyo games will take place over 17 action-packed days, it will feature a record 46 disciplines and 339 events held across 42 competition venues. You can access the official schedule here.
It will include six new events in its program: baseball, softball, sport climbing, surfing, skateboarding, and karate. Interestingly, baseball and softball were sports that used to be in the Olympics but have been absent since the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Since both sports are popular in Japan, the host country was able to bid for them to be included in this year’s games!
Whether you plan to watch swimming, basketball, or trampoline gymnastics, the Tokyo 2020 Olympics will be a bright and exciting part of 2021 for everyone.
