World Environment Day 2021
World Environment Day is the United Nations’ day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action to protect our environment and global society. Held annually since 1974, the Day has also become a vital platform for promoting progress on the environmental dimensions of the Sustainable Development Goals. This year’s World Environment Day will be hosted by Pakistan with a theme of #GENERATIONRESTORATION and focus on resetting our relationship with nature.
As host of World Environment Day 2021, Pakistan will highlight environmental issues and showcase the country’s own initiatives and its role in global efforts. Pakistan has already shown real leadership in efforts to restore the country’s forests; Prime Minister Imran Khan has planned one of the world’s most ambitious afforestation efforts by expanding and restoring the country’s forests through a 10 billion tree tsunami over 5 years. The campaign includes restoring mangroves and forests, as well as planting trees in urban settings, including schools, colleges, public parks and green belts. Pakistan has also launched an Ecosystem Restoration Fund to support nature-based solutions to climate change and facilitate the transition towards environmentally resilient, ecologically targeted initiatives covering afforestation and biodiversity conservation.1
In 2016, nearly 200 countries signed up to the Paris Agreement, which set individual targets aimed at preventing global temperatures from rising above 2˚C this century, and also to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase even further to 1.5˚C or less. This is an extremely important pact for international cooperation on tackling climate change, and countries are taking steps to deliver on it. The United Kingdom, Norway, France and New Zealand are some of the countries that have legally committed to reach net zero emissions by 2050.2
Changes towards environmental sustainability start small but must not be overlooked. While small changes may not have a global impact, it is possible to make a big impression on those in your local community and engender revolutions at the local scale. #GENERATIONRESTORATION is in full flow at Solaris health, and we hope that others may take inspiration and seek to take part in World Environment Day, not only on June 5th, but every day.
